What should I know?

You need to have B.Ed in addition to a bachelors degree. Most of the good schools expect you to have a post graduate degree in the subject you are intending to teach.

Is this career suitable for me?

Are you

• good at teaching other people information?
• willing to put up with less pay for lots of work?
• willing to help each and every student, even when they seem like a lost cause?

If not, don’t even try. Don’t become a teacher for the sake of a job. Your poor quality of teaching is going to affect a lot of students very badly.

The reasons to become a teacher are

• genuine love for the welfare of the students and a deep desire for their progression.
• have great communication skills.
• love for the subject you teach

It is not a profession with amazing material rewards, but one is generously rewarded spiritually.

Many people get into teaching, because they do not make it to any other jobs. But this shouldn’t be the case. You need to have good subject knowledge and you should be a good researcher. You should know how to guide students. As a teacher it is your responsibility to inspire and make your students a life time learner. Teaching isn’t really a career, it’s a vocation. You just can’t do it if you don’t like kids and aren’t prepared to sacrifice a lot for them.

Additional Notes

Some do have the passion for teaching, but they might need a profession which pays better. They can choose to become a teacher after some years of corporate life. It can be very rewarding and refreshing. Teachers with industrial experience are always in demand.

Also you can take private tuition and online classes which can earn you a decent money.
