I am Shikha Sharma, currently working as a Manager Operations and HR, with JBB Corporate Consultancy Pvt. Ltd. in Mohali. I have nearly 7+ years of experience in end to end recruitment as a consultant. I developed interest in writing resumes , when a friend asked me to help him with one. Since then, it has  been almost 3 years now that I write resumes and now it has become my earning source too. I have written resumes for Army Officers, Managers in the Corporate, AVP/VP and CEO of some good companies.

Who is a Resume Writer?

A Resume Writer is a professional, creating a picture of your career on a page, with few words. So many years of experience is depicted in just few words in the correct manner to show what your growth has been as a professional.

How did you became a HR Professional?

I started my career working as a Recruitment Consultant and went through a huge change in my life. Due to the change, I started loving to talk to people, understand different levels of an organisation, different approaches to life at different situations etc. I was someone who could never talk to strangers, but my job as a recruiter helped me do that and now today I can talk to anyone working at any level of hierarchy.

What are the challenges faced by a HR Professional/Resume Writer?

It is more or less a thankless job. Challenges faced by a recruitment consultant are mainly due to candidates. They

  • don’t reach the interview venue
  • don’t pick calls
  • mislead with their information
  • back out from offers

Challenges as a Resume Writer:

  • People assume that resume writing is a free service
  • They don’t understand the effort and labor put into the writing
  • We often get late payments

What things would you do differently in preparing for this career?

I wish I had the theoretical knowledge too. If you are the one who does not believe in theories, you should keep in mind that theoretical knowledge is important.

What are the skills required to be a Resume Writer?

  1. Excellent Communication skills (English)
  2. Writing skills
  3. Interest in creative writing
  4. Proactive approach to speak to people and understand their requirement
  5. Sharp vocabulary

Degree qualification nowadays is mandate, which is MBA in HR or equivalent diploma.

When you are interested in doing something, you make necessary changes in yourself to be the best fit in to the career.

What are some alternate career options for a HR Professional?

  • Recruitment Consultant
  • Resume Writer
  • Training and Development
  • HR and Admin- Generalist
  • Client Management

How do I know if a career in Human Resource is for me?

Anyone looking for a career in HR has to be upfront and should be able to play with words. You need to be very good with people, communication, negotiation and motivating people further.

You should enjoy learning more and more about it, enjoy exploring the depth of the concerned industry, and never lose interest in what you are doing.

What do you think everyone leaving higher secondary school should know?

Anyone passing out from school should have a brief knowledge about his line of interest and details about the current updates of the career he/she wants to chose.

I believe, the hardships are always there in everyone’s life, it is the approach of an individual that pulls him up or down in the struggle of life. Just dream and believe in yourself, no one can stop you from being an achiever. Appreciate what comes to you, as an opportunity.
